With a career spanning more than four decades, Jeffrey Yong has dedicated his life to the art and science of lutherie. Since building his first guitar in 1985, he has developed an international reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, innovative design, and, above all, his pioneering exploration of unconventional woods.

For decades, Jeffrey has studied the acoustic characteristics of woods beyond the traditional tonewood canon. He pioneered the use of Malaysian Blackwood in guitar making and established Monkeypod as a serious tonewood, famously building a guitar almost entirely from Monkeypod that won the blind listening test at the 2006 Guild of American Luthiers Convention.

The Guild of American Luthiers also describes him specifically as a luthier specializing in non-traditional methods and local exotic woods, and has featured him teaching an “Alternative Woods for Instrument Making” workshop.

Jeffrey’s approach goes beyond established formulas. His work explores the relationship between wood, acoustics, craftsmanship, and design, guided by his philosophy of combining art, science, and craftsmanship. His decades of research and experimentation with alternative woods have given him an exceptional understanding of how unconventional materials can be developed into expressive musical instruments.
